CNC preventive maintenance in Wisconsin
Scheduled visits that check the same things every time, write the numbers down and catch wear before it becomes a breakdown. Mills, lathes, fabrication machines and plant equipment.
What we fix
- Lube, filters and fluids
- Backlash and geometry checks
- Spindle runout and drawbar force
- Hydraulic and air systems
- Written report every visit

Quick answerLocalSpindle of Wisconsin runs preventive maintenance on CNC machines and plant equipment across the state. A PM visit covers lubrication, filters and fluids, backlash and geometry, spindle runout and drawbar force, hydraulic and air systems, cabinet cooling, safety devices and a control backup, with a written report that tracks your numbers from visit to visit.
From our techs
Why PM pays in a Wisconsin shop
Most breakdowns we’re called for give warnings first: an axis load that crept up, a spindle that got a little louder, a hydraulic unit that started running hot. A PM visit is where those warnings get caught, measured and written down, so the repair happens on your schedule instead of in the middle of a hot job.
Seasons matter here. Before winter we look at heaters, oil grades and warm-up routines for cold buildings. Before summer we clean cabinet filters, check fans and coolers, and look at coolant concentration and bacteria, because summer is when sumps go bad.
What we measure
The value of PM is in the trend. We record backlash per axis, spindle runout and drawbar force, hydraulic pressures, way lube delivery, and level on the machines where it matters. Next visit we measure the same way and compare. A number that moves tells us where to look before anything fails.
You get every number in a written report, along with what we serviced, what we’d watch, and anything that needs a repair quoted.
Plans built around your floor
A plan starts with a walk through your shop. We look at which machines carry your work, how many hours they run and what they’ve cost you in downtime, and build a schedule around that. Critical machines might get a visit every quarter; a backup saw might get one a year. See maintenance plans for how plans are set up.
Symptoms
What you're seeing, and what it usually means
The alarm names the axis or the unit. These are the causes we find behind it most often.
| What you’re seeing | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Small alarms that clear on reset | Early warnings of lube, air, hydraulic or sensor problems that PM catches. |
| Parts drifting over the course of a run | Thermal growth, backlash or way wear that shows in measurements first. |
| Hydraulic unit running hot | Dirty oil, a worn pump, a clogged cooler or a relief valve set wrong. |
| Coolant smells or foams | Wrong concentration, tramp oil or bacteria growth. Worst in summer. |
| Cabinet alarms in hot weather | Clogged filters, dead fans or failed coolers. |
| Machine needs warm-up longer every winter | Lube, oil grade or heater issues in a cold building. |

A full visit
What a visit can cover
- Way lube, spindle lube and grease points
- Filters: hydraulic, coolant, air and cabinet
- Backlash per axis, recorded
- Spindle runout and drawbar force
- Hydraulic pressures, oil condition and leaks
- Coolant concentration and sump condition
- Cabinet cooling, fans and seals
- Safety devices, interlocks and a control backup
On the van
- Indicators, test bars and levels
- Drawbar force gauge
- Refractometer for coolant
- Filters, lube fittings and common wear parts
- Report forms and backup media
Example service call
PM visit catches a failing ballscrew support bearing
The call
A job shop in Waukesha County has its four main machining centers on a quarterly plan. On one visit the X axis backlash on one machine had doubled since the last report.
What we did
- Measure. Backlash was well up from the previous visit, and the support bearing at the motor end felt rough by hand.
- Plan. We quoted the bearing replacement and scheduled it for a Saturday so production wasn’t touched.
- Repair. Replaced the support bearing, checked the ballscrew and coupling, and reset the backlash compensation.
- Record. Backlash back to its old number, written into the report as the new baseline.
The result. Fixed on a planned Saturday instead of failing mid-job. The shop's report now shows the trend for every machine.
A typical call, written to show how we work. It isn’t a specific customer.

From the field
Preventive maintenance: tips from our techs
Keep the report
The trend from visit to visit is worth more than any one visit. Keep them in one place.
Seasonal checks matter here
Before winter: oil, heaters and warm-up. Before summer: cabinet cooling and coolant.
Let operators flag things
The person running the machine hears the change first. Give them a place to write it down for the next PM.
Lubrication, filters, fluids, backlash and geometry, spindle checks, hydraulics and air, cabinet cooling, safety devices and a control backup, all written up.
It depends on hours and how critical the machine is. Many shops do quarterly on key machines and twice a year on the rest.
Yes: press brakes, shears, lasers, punches, saws and hydraulic equipment.
Tell us what works for your shop and we’ll schedule around production when we can.
Yes, every visit, with the numbers and what to watch.
