From our techs
Wisconsin's router shops
Wisconsin has a deep woodworking and cabinet industry, and plenty of plastics and sign shops, so routers are everywhere. They run fast and long, in dust that finds its way into everything. The most common calls: spindles getting noisy, parts moving on the table because vacuum is weak, and gantries that rack or lose steps.
Router spindles are high-speed and sensitive to dust, collet wear and crashes. We check runout, collets and tool holders, temperature and noise, and rebuild spindles when bearings are done.
Vacuum, gantries and changers
Weak hold-down is usually leaks: a worn spoilboard, gaskets, valves, or a vacuum pump that’s tired or needs service. We test vacuum at the pump and the table to find where it’s going.
Gantries with two drive motors need to stay square. A gantry that racks after a crash or loses position at speed has a drive, rack, pinion or coupling problem. Tool changers on routers jam on dust and worn pockets. We clean, adjust and replace what’s worn.
Symptoms
What you're seeing, and what it usually means
The alarm names the axis or the unit. These are the causes we find behind it most often.
| What you’re seeing | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Parts shift during the cut | Vacuum leaks, a worn spoilboard or a tired vacuum pump. |
| Spindle loud or hot | Bearings, collet problems or dust contamination. |
| Gantry out of square | Crash damage, a slipping pinion or a drive fault. |
| Steps lost at high speed | Drive tuning, loose couplings or worn rack. |
| Tool changer jams | Dust, pocket wear, air pressure or sensor problems. |
| Machine won’t home | Limit or home switch, wiring or a drive fault. |

Example service call
Cabinet shop router losing hold-down on small parts
The call
A cabinet shop in Marathon County had small parts shifting during nested cuts on a router that used to hold them fine.
What we did
- Phone. We asked about spoilboard condition and vacuum reading. The gauge was lower than usual.
- On site. The spoilboard was worn thin in spots and a zone valve gasket was leaking.
- Fix. Replaced the gasket, serviced the vacuum pump and recommended resurfacing the spoilboard, which the shop did.
- Check. Vacuum back up and small parts held through the nest.
The result. Nested jobs ran without shifting parts.

CNC router: tips from our techs
Resurface the spoilboard
Worn spoilboards leak vacuum. Resurface on a schedule.
Blow out the cabinet
Dust in the electrical cabinet causes heat and faults.
Check collets
Worn collets hurt finish and spindle life.
