Waterjet repair in Wisconsin

Waterjets back to cutting: intensifier and direct-drive pumps, high pressure seals and check valves, cutting heads, orifices, abrasive delivery, and the table’s motion system.

What we fix

Techs from the Milwaukee, Madison and Green Bay regions.

Quick answerLocalSpindle of Wisconsin repairs waterjets across the state, including Flow, Omax, Jet Edge, Wardjet and KMT pumps. We fix pressure loss, high pressure seal and check valve failures, cutting head and orifice problems, abrasive delivery, taper and cut quality, and motion and control faults.

From our techs

Pressure problems start at the pump

A waterjet that won’t build or hold pressure is usually telling you about high pressure seals, check valves or a leak somewhere in the plumbing. Intensifier pumps have a known set of wear parts and a rebuild interval; direct-drive pumps have their own. We find which part is leaking, rebuild the components that need it, and check the low pressure side too: water quality, booster pump and filters.

Water quality matters. Hard or poorly filtered water wears seals and orifices fast, and plenty of Wisconsin well water is hard. If your seals don’t last, we’ll look at what’s going into the pump.

Cut quality, abrasive and motion

Taper, rough edges and stalls in the cut come from the orifice, the mixing tube, abrasive flow and the cutting speed. We check the cutting head, abrasive hopper and delivery, and the hose for clogs, and look at the motion system for backlash and drive problems that show up in part accuracy.

Symptoms

What you're seeing, and what it usually means

The alarm names the axis or the unit. These are the causes we find behind it most often.

What you’re seeingWhat it usually means
Pressure won’t build or drops during a cutWorn high pressure seals, check valves or a leak in the plumbing.
Weep holes drippingA seal or fitting failing behind that weep hole.
Abrasive stops or pulsesWet or clumped abrasive, a clogged line or a metering problem.
Taper or rough edgesWorn orifice or mixing tube, abrasive flow or speed.
Pump runs hot or noisyOil, cooling or a mechanical wear issue in the pump.
Parts out of sizeMotion backlash, drive problems or a loose head.

Example service call

Waterjet pressure dropping mid-cut

The call

A job shop in Winnebago County had a waterjet that lost pressure partway through long cuts, with water dripping from one weep hole.

What we did

  1. Phone. The weep hole location pointed to one end of the intensifier.
  2. On site. The high pressure seal and check valve on that end were worn.
  3. Fix. Rebuilt that end with new seals and check valve parts, and checked the water filter.
  4. Check. Pressure held through a long test cut.

The result. Cutting the same day. We suggested a water hardness check.

From the field

Waterjet: tips from our techs

01

Watch the weep holes

A drip tells you which seal is going. Catch it early.

02

Keep abrasive dry

Damp abrasive clumps and stops the cut.

03

Check water quality

Hard water shortens seal and orifice life.
