From our techs
Why a saw cuts crooked
A saw that cuts out of square is the most common saw call we get, and the blade is only sometimes the problem. Worn carbide guides, guide arms set too far apart, low blade tension, a feed rate too aggressive for the material, or a wheel that’s worn on its face will all walk the blade. We check them in order, cheapest first.
Production saws in steel service centers and fab shops run all shift, so small wear adds up fast. Guides and brushes are wear parts, and a saw that hasn’t had them looked at in a year is probably cutting worse than it could.
Feeds, vises and automation
On automatic saws, the shuttle vise, the feed length measurement and the hydraulics that drive them cause as many stops as the cut itself. We troubleshoot feed length errors, vise pressure, hydraulic valves and the sensors that tell the control where the bar is.
Symptoms
What you're seeing, and what it usually means
The alarm names the axis or the unit. These are the causes we find behind it most often.
| What you’re seeing | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Cut out of square or tapered | Worn guides, low tension, guide arms set wide, dull blade or wheel wear. |
| Blades break early | Wrong tension, worn wheels, guides pinching, or the wrong blade for the material. |
| Feed length wrong | Encoder, feed vise slipping or a hydraulic issue. |
| Saw stalls in the cut | Feed rate too high, low drive power, or a slipping belt or gearbox problem. |
| Vise won’t clamp hard | Hydraulic pressure, a leaking cylinder or a valve problem. |
| Chips packing the blade | Brush worn or mis-set, coolant flow or concentration. |

Example service call
Band saw cutting out of square on large bar
The call
A steel processor in Kenosha County had a production band saw cutting several thousandths out of square on large diameter bar, even with new blades.
What we did
- Phone. We asked about guide condition and when they were last changed. Nobody remembered.
- On site. Carbide guides were worn and the movable guide arm was set much wider than needed.
- Fix. Replaced the guides, set the arm close to the work, set tension to spec and adjusted the chip brush.
- Check. Test cuts square within the shop’s tolerance.
The result. Running square the same visit. Guides went on the PM list.
