Quick answerLocalSpindle of Wisconsin repairs fiber lasers, CO2 lasers and CNC plasma tables across the state, including Trumpf, Amada, Bystronic, Mazak Optonics, Mitsubishi, Prima Power, Hypertherm and Messer. We fix cut quality problems, cutting head and height control faults, chiller and cooling alarms, assist gas delivery, and motion, pallet changer and control problems.
From our techs
Cut quality is a chain
Good cut edges depend on a chain of things: the nozzle and its centering, the protective window, focus position, assist gas pressure and purity, the height control holding standoff, and the motion system moving smoothly at speed. When cuts go bad, we work the chain in order instead of chasing settings.
Fiber lasers have cut down on beam path trouble compared to CO2, but cutting heads, protective windows, capacitive height sensing and chillers still fail. On CO2 machines we also check mirrors, bellows and the resonator gas and optics.
Chillers and Wisconsin seasons
Laser chillers take a beating in Wisconsin. In summer, a chiller in a hot fab shop with dirty condenser fins can’t keep up, and the laser alarms or derates. In winter, a chiller near an exterior wall or a door can get cold enough to cause condensation in the head or even freeze if it isn’t protected. We clean, check and set up chillers for the season, and look at coolant condition and filters.
Plasma tables
On plasma tables, consumables and torch height control cause most cut quality complaints, but motion matters too: worn rack and pinion, loose gantry bearings and drive faults show up as wavy edges and out-of-round holes. We check torch height control, the gas console, the power supply, and the gantry mechanics.
Symptoms
What you're seeing, and what it usually means
The alarm names the axis or the unit. These are the causes we find behind it most often.
| What you’re seeing | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Dross or burrs on the bottom edge | Focus, gas pressure or purity, nozzle condition or cutting speed. |
| Cut quality changes across the sheet | Height control, sheet flatness, motion or a dirty protective window. |
| Head crash or collision alarm | Capacitive sensing fault, a tipped part, or a damaged nozzle or sensor. |
| Chiller alarm or laser derating | Dirty condenser, low coolant, a failing pump or a hot shop. |
| Wavy edges or out-of-round holes | Gantry bearing wear, rack and pinion, drive tuning or belt problems. |
| Pallet changer stops mid-cycle | Sensors, chains, drives or alignment. |

Example service call
Fiber laser derating every afternoon in July
The call
A fab shop in Brown County had a fiber laser that cut fine in the morning and started throwing chiller temperature alarms by mid-afternoon on hot days.
What we did
- Phone. We asked where the chiller sat and when the condenser was last cleaned. It was near the overhead door and hadn’t been cleaned.
- On site. The condenser fins were packed with dust and the coolant filter was dirty.
- Fix. Cleaned the condenser, changed the filter, topped up coolant and checked the set points.
- Check. The chiller held temperature through a full afternoon run.
The result. No more afternoon alarms. Condenser cleaning went on the summer PM list.

From the field
Fiber laser and plasma cutter: tips from our techs
Clean the chiller condenser
Dusty fins are the top cause of summer laser alarms.
Check the protective window daily
A dirty window robs power and changes cut quality.
Protect the chiller in winter
Keep it away from cold doors and walls, and follow the builder’s winter settings.
