Wire and sinker EDM repair in Wisconsin

Wire and sinker EDMs repaired for tool rooms and mold shops: auto-threading failures, wire breaks, generator faults, filtration and resistivity, dielectric systems and accuracy problems.

What we fix

Techs from the Milwaukee, Madison and Green Bay regions.

Quick answerLocalSpindle of Wisconsin repairs wire EDMs and sinker EDMs across the state, including Sodick, Mitsubishi, Makino, Fanuc RoboCut, GF AgieCharmilles, Brother and Hansvedt. We fix auto-threading and wire break problems, filtration, resistivity and dielectric issues, generator and power faults, and accuracy and taper problems.

From our techs

Wire EDMs: threading, breaks and water

Most wire EDM calls are about threading and wire breaks, and most of those come down to the wire path: worn guides and power contacts, a dirty annealing section, a clogged jet nozzle or the wrong wire tension. We go through the wire path piece by piece before blaming the threader.

The water system is the other half. Resistivity that won’t come down usually means the resin is spent, and filters that clog fast mean the machine is cutting more than they can handle or the filters are the wrong grade. Cold shop water in winter and warm water in summer both change how the machine cuts, so we check the chiller and temperature control too.

Sinker EDMs and generators

Sinker EDMs bring their own problems: dielectric oil condition and filtration, electrode wear that doesn’t match the settings, and generator faults. We test the generator, check servo and C-axis performance, and look at oil level, temperature and fire safety devices.

Accuracy in the tool room

When a wire EDM’s parts start drifting, we check the machine’s squareness and taper calibration, the guides, the axis mechanics and thermal stability. Tool and die shops in Wisconsin depend on tenths, so we measure rather than estimate and give you the numbers.

Symptoms

What you're seeing, and what it usually means

The alarm names the axis or the unit. These are the causes we find behind it most often.

Example service call

Wire EDM won't thread on the first try

The call

A tool and die shop in Waukesha County had a wire EDM that needed three or four threading attempts before it caught, wasting the start of every unattended run.

What we did

  1. Phone. We asked when the guides and power contacts were last changed. It had been a long time.
  2. On site. The lower guide was worn, the jet nozzle was partly clogged and the annealing area was dirty.
  3. Fix. Replaced the guide and contact, cleaned the nozzle and annealing section, and set wire tension.
  4. Check. Threaded on the first try repeatedly, including through a start hole.

The result. Unattended runs started reliably again. Guides and contacts went on a schedule.

A typical call, written to show how we work. It isn’t a specific customer.

EDM repair, wire and sinker: tips from our techs

01

Change guides and contacts on schedule

They’re cheap compared to wasted nights of failed threading.

02

Watch resistivity

If resin is spent, cutting slows and breaks go up.

03

Keep water temperature steady

Temperature swings change accuracy.
