Quick answerLocalSpindle of Wisconsin repairs surface, cylindrical, centerless and tool grinders across the state, including Okamoto, Chevalier, Brown and Sharpe, Harig, Mitsui, Jones and Shipman, Blanchard, Studer and Walter. We fix chatter and finish problems, size control, table hydraulics, wheelhead spindles, way wear and infeed and control faults.

From our techs

Finish problems have a source

Chatter marks, fish scales and patterns on a ground surface come from somewhere: an out-of-balance wheel, a worn wheelhead spindle, a loose belt or motor mount, vibration from the floor or a nearby machine, or a table that jerks as it reverses. We start with the wheel and dressing, then work through the spindle, the drive and the table.

Grinders are sensitive to the building. A grinder near a press or a forklift lane can pick up vibration that no amount of repair on the grinder will fix. If that’s the problem, we’ll tell you.

Hydraulics and ways

Many surface and cylindrical grinders use hydraulics for the table, and old oil, worn valves or air in the system show up as jerky reversals and stalls. We service the hydraulic unit, adjust reversals, and check way lubrication and wear. Worn ways can be scraped or the machine reconditioned when it’s worth it.

Old grinders still earn their keep

Some of the most accurate grinders in Wisconsin tool rooms are decades old. We keep them running, rebuild wheelhead spindles when they’re worn, and help you decide when reconditioning makes sense.

Example service call

Surface grinder leaving a chatter pattern

The call

A tool room in Milwaukee County had a surface grinder leaving a fine chatter pattern that a new wheel didn’t fix.

What we did

  1. Phone. We asked whether the pattern changed with wheel speed. It did.
  2. On site. Wheel balance was fine, but the spindle drive belt was worn and the motor mount bolts were loose.
  3. Fix. Replaced the belt, tightened and shimmed the motor mount, and rebalanced the wheel on the machine.
  4. Check. Test parts came out with a clean finish.

The result. Finish back to normal the same visit.
