From our techs
Lines in food, dairy, paper and distribution
Wisconsin’s food and dairy plants, paper converters and distribution centers run conveyors and packaging lines hard, often with washdown, heat or dust. Line stops come in a few flavors: mechanical (belts, chains, bearings, gearboxes), sensing (photo-eyes and prox switches that are dirty, wet or misaligned) and control (PLCs, drives and the timing between machines).
We find which kind of problem it is by watching the line, checking the stop logs and going online with the PLC when needed.
Recurring jams
A jam that keeps coming back at the same spot usually has a mechanical cause: a transfer that’s slightly high, a worn guide rail, a belt that’s stretched, or a speed mismatch between two conveyors. We measure and adjust instead of clearing the jam and walking away.
Symptoms
What you're seeing, and what it usually means
The alarm names the axis or the unit. These are the causes we find behind it most often.
| What you’re seeing | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Belt wanders or slips | Tracking, tension, worn lagging or a seized roller. |
| Gearbox noisy or hot | Low oil, worn bearings or gears, or misalignment. |
| Stops at the same spot | Sensor alignment, transfer height or guide rail wear. |
| Wrapper film breaks | Pre-stretch rollers, film tension settings or a worn carriage. |
| Case packer misfeeds | Timing, vacuum, glue system or sensor problems. |
| Line won’t restart after a stop | Safety reset, PLC sequence or a drive fault. |

Example service call
Case packer misfeeding after a speed increase
The call
A food plant in Brown County raised line speed and started getting case packer misfeeds every few minutes.
What we did
- Phone. We asked what changed. Only the speed.
- On site. The infeed conveyor accelerated product into the packer faster than the timing was set for, and one photo-eye was at the edge of its range.
- Fix. Adjusted the photo-eye, set the infeed speed ratio and updated the packer timing.
- Check. Ran at the new speed for a full hour without a misfeed.
The result. Line held the higher speed.

A recurring jam has a reason. Track where it happens.
